Nieuwmarkt
Nieuwmarkt ("New market") is a square in the centre of the Dutch capital Amsterdam. The surrounding area is known as the Nieuwmarktbuurt (Nieuwmarkt district).

The square is located in Amsterdam's Chinatown, next to the De Wallen (Red Light District). There are over 20 cafés and coffeeshops facing the square. There is a daily market on the square, as well as an organic food market on Saturdays and a market for antiques and books on Sundays in the summer months.

The Nieuwmarkt is dominated by a building known as De Waag, originally a gate in the Medieval city walls but converted into a weighing house after the walls were demolished in the 17th century.

The square was created when the canals around the Waag were filled in 1614, and was used as a marketplace (hence the name). In World War II the square was used by the Nazis as a collection point for Jews who had been rounded up to be sent to the concentration camps.

In the 1970s many buildings on and around the square were torn down to make way for a planned metro and highway which was to run right through the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood. This led to heavy rioting (the Nieuwmarktrellen ) in 1975 and, ultimately, abandonment of the highway plans. The metro, however, was constructed, and Nieuwmarkt is now a station on the Amsterdam metro (subway) system.

Begijnhof
From the entrance's plate:

The name Begijnhof came into use in 1389 when, until about 1400, the Begijnhof extended only as far as the court's church. The area was to become known as the 'grote hof' (great court)

From 1400, the court was extended to the Spui and so 'kleine hof' (little court) came into being, too. Most of the houses were built in the early fifteenth century. The 'Houten Huys' (wooden house), built about 1477, remains virtually in its original state.

In 1607, as a consequence of the Reformation, the Begijnhof church was provided for use as the English Presbyterian Church. The R.C. chapal dates from 1680 and was originally a 'schuilkerk', a 'hidden' church.

The Begijnhof was extensively renovated between 1984 and 1987. Although there are no Beguines living here now (the last one died in 1971), the Begijnhof remains home to woman who are, primarily, of the Catholic tradition.

From Wikipedia:
The Begijnhof is the only inner court in Amsterdam which was founded during the Middle Ages, and therefore lies within the Singel — the innermost canal of Amsterdam's circular canal system. The Begijnhof is at medieval street level, which means a metre below the rest of the old city centre.

It is unclear when exactly the Begijnhof (Beguines' court) was founded. In 1346, the beguines still lived in a house (a document of that time mentioned a beghynhuys). A courtyard was only first mentioned in 1389.

Originally the Begijnhof was entirely encircled by water (the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, the Spui and the Begijnensloot or "Beguines' Ditch"), with the sole entrance located at the Begijnensteeg ("Beguines' Alley"), which had a bridge across the Begijnensloot. The back facades were therefore water-locked. The Spui entrance only dates back to the 19th century.

Just off the Trail
I *really* enjoy my hikes in the woods and during one such hike, I stopped to enjoy this little stream. It was really quiet, warm sitting right there. I kinda' hoped a deer would wander by..

Hawaii
This album could be titled "I wish I were in Hawaii", most days!
These photos were taken on a scuba diving holiday to Maui, February-March 2006.
The big storms drenched Oahu but left Southwest Maui relatively dry.
Note: There isn't much weather at 35 feet or below!

Vondelpark
The Vondelpark is a park in Amsterdam, the Netherlands named after the seventeenth-century writer, Joost van den Vondel.
Designed by garden architect Jan David Zocher, the park was created in 1864. In 1865 it was opened to the public. Originally named the New Park, the public quickly started calling the park Vondelpark after a statue of the writer was placed, and eventually the name was adopted officially. Until 1953, the park was owned by the Vereniging tot aanleg van een rij- en wandelpark (Society for creating a park for riding and strolling). When they could no longer afford to maintain the park, they donated it to the city of Amsterdam.
Yearly events include a golf tournament and a running contest.
The park was also referenced in an Omar Rodriguez's self-titled 2005 album in the track "Vondelpark bij nacht". Among the Dutch the reference in the Acda en de Munnik song 'Vondelpark vannacht' will probably ring a bell.

Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge)
The Magere Brug ("Skinny Bridge") is a bridge over the river Amstel in the city centre of Amsterdam. It connects the banks of the river at Kerkstraat street, between Keizersgracht canal and Prinsengracht canal.
The Magere Brug is a bascule bridge made of white painted wood. It was built in 1670 and broadened in 1871. The last major renovation was done in 1969. Since 2003, only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to use the bridge. Many times a day it is opened in order to let ships pass; the boats used for sightseeing tours are low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed. The bridge is decorated with 1200 light bulbs that are turned on in the evening.
Every year on V-E Day (Dutch: bevrijdingsdag) there is a concert next to the bridge, which Queen Beatrix usually attends.
The bridge can be seen in a number of films, such as the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever from 1971.
