 | Album Title: Syria -Hama (match 100 %) The garden city of Hama (also famous for its gigantic norias, or waterwheels)was a prosperous Aramaean city state and a valued prize of faraway conquerors. The city had been sacked and rebuilt many times. The latest occurred in 1982, when the Muslim Brotherhood, a fundamentalist Islamic rebel group, rose in rebellion against the Assad regime. Assad quickly crushed the rebellion with great brutality, with the air and artillery forces bombing the city with great ferocity. Once they entered the city, the army shot anyone they encountered. After a series of great massacres, 25,000 people had perished and the city was left in ruins. The city had since been rebuilt, but the new Apamee Cham Palace Hotel was built over “the houses and bodies of tho USAnds”.

 | Album Title: Southwest Perplexities (match 100 %) These are scanned pictures from my trip to USA Southwest in 1994, when I traveled through Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico with a rented motor-home.
My problem -- I don't know where exactly (which location/National Park, etc) I have taken these pictures. I suppose it was Utah but other than that, I don't have a clue.
If you have an idea where I could have created one or the other picture, please let me know. Just post a comment (on the details page) or send me an email.
Thanks in advance.

fisherboats.
The history of Byblos can be traced back some 7000 years, during the
Neolithic
period. Ever since, it has been inhabited by Phoenicians, Persians,
Alexander
the Great, the Romans, the Byzantines, Arabs, the CrUSAders, the Ottomans.
Byblos then became less important, and now is a quiet town some 40
kilometres
north of Beyrut.

 | Album Title: Föhn b/w (match 100 %)
I did a trip to the park of Nymphenburg Castle the other day and I've had the luck to witness one of the local Munich weather phenomena which is caused by warm winds from the german mountains, the Alps. This kind of wind is called "Föhn".
Wikipedia explains it better:
A föhn wind or foehn wind occurs when a deep layer of prevailing wind is forced over a mountain range. As the wind moves upslope, it expands and cools, causing water vapor to precipitate out. This dehydrated air then passes over the crest and begins to move downslope. As the wind descends to lower levels on the leeward side of the mountains, the air heats as it comes under greater atmospheric pressure creating strong, gusty, warm and dry winds. Föhn winds can raise temperatures as much as 30°C (54°F) in just a matter of hours. Winds of this type are called "snow-eaters" for their ability to make snow melt rapidly. This ability is based not only on high temperature, but also the low relative humidity of the air mass. Föhn winds are also associated with the rapid spread of wildfires, making some regions which experience these winds particularly fire-prone.
The name föhn (from the German Föhn, pronounced [fø?n]) originated in the Alps, and central Europe enjoys a warmer climate due to them. Föhn winds are notorious among mountaineers in the Alps, especially those climbing the Eiger, for whom the winds add additional difficulty in ascending an already difficult peak. AEG registered the trademark Fön in the 1920s for its hairdryer, which is widely used as a synonym in the German language.
These winds are often associated in popular mythology with illness ranging from migraines to psychosis. The Santa Ana winds are often called "the murder winds." A study by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München found that suicide and accidents increased by 10 percent during föhn winds in Central Europe. The ca USAtion of Föhnkrankheit (English: Föhn-sickness), however, remains to be proven. Upload Date: 2006-05-27 Photographer: MacMurph Recommendations: 34 |

 | Album Title: Africa-South Africa-Simonstown (match 100 %) Simon's Town (also widely written Simonstown and, in Afrikaans, Simonstad), is a village and a naval base in South Africa, near Cape Town. It is located on the shores of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. For more than two centuries it has been an important naval base and harbour (first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy). The town is named after Simon van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony. The land rises steeply from near the water's edge and the picturesque village is boxed in along the shoreline by the heights above. The small harbour itself is not a particularly good natural harbour and is protected from swells by a breakwater that was built with tho USAnds of huge blocks of sandstone quarried out of the face of the mountain above. Simon's Town is now in effect a suburb of greater Cape Town. It is the terminus of a railway line that runs south from the central business district of Cape Town. In places the railway line hugs the steep eastern shore of False Bay quite spectacularly and in bad weather foam from some heavy swells will fly up and wet the trains.
Boulders Beach is located a few kilometres to the south of Simon's Town. Here small coves with white sandy beaches and calm shallow water are interspersed between boulders of Cape granite. There has been a colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach since 1985. There is no record of the birds having lived here prior to that date, so their decision to settle in an area already well-utilized by humans is remarkable. There are only three penguin populations on the mainland in southern Africa; the others are close to Hermanus at Stoney Point and Betty's Bay.

 | Album Title: Lebanon -Byblos (match 100 %) Byblos is an easy town to fall in love with. With its picturesque ancient fishing harbour, Roman site, Cr USAder castle and restored Souq area, it is a must visit if you go to Beirut.
In the 3rd millenium BC it became the most important trading post on the eastern Mediterranean. It was renamed Byblos by the Greeks who ruled from 333 BC. The Romans under pompey took over Byblos in 64 BC but in AD 1104 it fell to the Cr USAders.
Subsequent centuries under Ottoman and mamluk rule saw Byblos' international importance as a trading port wane with Beirut taking over as the region's major port. Upload Date: 2006-05-17 Photographer: nigel Recommendations: 37 |
